Thats what I want to be doing. The manager sent me apiece of legal paper with about ten different things on it, written out by hand, and said, "Sign it." And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. You feel like youre on a high-wire all the time. I go there, from time to time, when Im in town. When I'm playing rock and roll with the Starship, if I sat there filling in all over the place, it would sound messy. I dont wanna see that get damaged. We all put our lives and sweat and blood and tears into this thing. I don't want to do it like some of the clinics I've seen where the guy will come out and say, . Aynsley had played with Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, David Bowie and John Mayall. Okay. It might appeal to all of the drummers in the world, but we only have X amount of drummers who are going to go out and buy that record. Hes not just a Steve Perry emulator. And the pressure of walking in front of an audience every night, and wanting to be what you know they want you to be, and what you want to be for them, and to have this silly little thing in your throat thats about as neurotic as you are, is difficult. I got my review at the end of the night. You can't have million-note fills allover the place be- cause people can't hear them, they can't understand it, and so they won't want to buy it. If you play the bass and snare at the same time, you 'llfind that the snare drum sound disappears. I like to do it when I'm not on the road. RM: And he, in turn, will take you to different places; RM: This all ties in with what you were telling me the other night about how you base most of what you do on listening to the melody. It wasn't anything special, but I thought it was neat it was a different sound-sort of a power thing. For the time being, Dunbar also produced a blues-rock music group known as the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, which highlighted guitarist/vocalist John Moorshead, bassist Alex Dmochowski, and organist Victor Brox. His solos are always very musical and he always has something new to say. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. The music is dear to me. Like, Okay, we won the World Series. Yeah., He knows he wasnt the only drummer considered for the role but he was surprised when Bruce Kulick later told him that one of his heroes, Aynsley Dunbar, had been auditioned and then ruled out. He started his professional career in Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen in 1963. And not until it really took off, I think, did that question really get answered. Definitely. I imagine the band had become a huge business, given all the records youd sold. How do you draw the line between playing freely enough for yourself and at the same time, being consistent enough that the rest of the band knows what you're doing? And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? I had that group The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation] for about three years, and we built a following around the country. So I have a lawsuit against them. Yeah. There was something that we had together that I think neither of us have been able to find anywhere else. If you watch the [Behind the Music] documentary on VH1its pretty much one-sided, with Perry, the way they edited that thing, but there was a couple funny things that went down in that interview. So the Beatles not only opened up new designs of music, but also faster distribution. It was a bit of a learning curve, for me. Everything's electronic. Especially Journey and Foreigner. And then when they started editing with the lyricslike on Just a small-town girl, theyre cuttin across to the wife, and theyre cuttin to everybody, as appropriately as the lyrics canwow. Dunbar began his career on the British blues-rock scene, playing with Champion Jack Dupree and Eddie Boyd before becoming the drummer for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1967; he was influenced by jazz and the Who's Keith Moon as well. **But do you think your drinking affected your relationships with the other guys in the band? The pair, along with Rod Stewart, were the backbone of the Jeff Beck Group from its formation in 1967 until just over two years later. Im not. With their 1978 breakthrough album, Infinity, some rock writers even today attempt to reduce the remarkable transformation by the San Francisco band Journey as "talented, veteran, but commercially struggling group hires world-class singer, which anybody would recognize; shortens song arrangements; and instantly becomes the biggest band in America". It was kind of weird, because as soon as we started cranking up, the orchestra sort of disappeared. Yeah. Every time I told somebody I was writing a story about the new lead singer of Journey, Id get the same incredulous response: Steve Perrys not the lead singer of Journey anymore? Even though the piece I was writing was mostly going to be about Arnel Pineda (whose pre-Journey work can be seen here) and the present-day incarnation of the band, I knew I couldnt write anything about Journey without getting in touch with Steve Perry. I ended up going to Bowie's party after Lou's session, and Bowie asked me if I'd like to join him. Don Ellis, who was running the west coast side of Columbia at the time, heard the tape and really liked the group. I know that sounds intense, but I had to take care of myself. The bigger the drum, the more damping you put inside it, and so you're playing less area anyway. One time, I went therethere used to be a coffee shop right in front of it, and I was having coffee, watching people. I mean, I heard him the first time with David Bowie. And those lyrics are a big part of it. But I needed to go home. RM: How did you decide on your particular style? I was supposed to talk to him for thirty minutes, but he had a lot to sayabout how he joined the band, about why he left, and about the pride he still takes in the work they did togetherand we ended up talking for almost two hours. Only certain people understand the technique parts. Then I was playing lead lines on the violin. **. Pete is a good guy to jam with because he's a good bass player and he is capable of hearing things and moving right into them from what he was doing. On one song he gave me a chart that was all marching-type drumming-roll after roll, flams, drags, ruffs-and it was great. Aynsley Thomas Dunbar is an English drummer. So he and I interact the most on stage. So when you told them you couldnt do it anymoreat that point, were you thinking of it as a hiatus, or a breakup? Originally I was only going to play on half the record, and they were going to do the other half with another studio musician. I just love it. He is not dating anyone. Now, I come offstage feeling great, happy, and everything else. The more you play, the less they hear. Well, like I saidwe were good together. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. Weve had our problems too, but if it wasnt for Herbie, I woulda had no chance, to sing on that grand stage. Im _not _whining. You were feeling like you were going to burn it out. But along with this, you have to print that I cant blame them. And so now Ive been sober for the last nine months, and I never want to look back. Pete also has a lot of input when he's playing bass. They werent sure about any of it. I would read in down beat that so and so's new record was out, I'd go to the shop and never see it. Still am. We started trying to put back the original band, with Ross and Smith. I had been through a lot of divorces, and probably a lot of em due to this problem, and I had to just really face everything on a straight level. The group released many albums from 1969-1970, including a self-titled work, Doctor Dunbar's Prescription, also to Mum From Aynsley . Called Patiently. It began at that point for me, with the band. RM: It looks as though you are singing to yourself while you solo. They would have kept going, I know that. Most of them are in L.A. RM: How did your professional career develop? But Im embracing it. I arrived in L.A. and his wife picked me up at the airport and took me to his house, where I lived for nine months. Id write some melodies, Id write some hooks. It's something you learn through understanding what your job is and what it should sound like as a finished product. He's with the Starship." And it took a few more months, until October, and then I was ready, and found the right doctor for me. They were already acting like stars. He was!. During a phone interview, Schon seems filled with the same kind of energy, despite nearing the end of a grueling 57-city tour with no break longer than a week. I'll give it up; " It was more like, "I got this far. It wasn't like, "Well, I've played every- thing 1 want to play, so now. The next show is sold out. And no contracts were really binding me to have to be or do anything anymore. Which singers will do a lotbut I only had to do it once. We just try not to talk about him. While I was doing that, David Bowie called and invited me to one of his gigs. AD: When Craig writes a song, he will actually make a demo tape with a drum track on it, which is great because it gives me ideas. We actually never even quit. Anybody who plays in a group must realize that everybody in the group must always be aware of everybody else. When you see a Journey song turn up on a movie soundtrack, or on TV? _[laughs] _Okay? In another interview, he stated " I eventually got the sack for . And that is sort of a drag. It was so cool. And he was a great vocalist for what they were looking for, but they didnt want to have a singer out front.
